Foothill College plays first scrimmage of the 2011 season against Menlo College

Foothill College played for the first time on the new soccer field. "The new complex is amazing. We have everything you could ever want. This new soccer complex will really help us play beautiful soccer this year." said assitant coach Ed Villalpando. The game was very evenly played with both teams playing good defense. In the first half of the game Owls freshman Bryanna Lopez had a nice break away and took a good shot but the Menlo GK made a great save. Both teams looked very dangerous on set plays as well. Coach Owen Flannery said, "I am happy with the way this game went. Our team played good today. They moved the ball well together, and at times, looked as if they had played together for years." The Owls play next against Cal State East Bay Next Tuesday.

The Lady Owls are getting ready for the 2011 Soccer Season

Foothill College will start their season Monday August 15th. All of the returners, recruits and walk ons will report to camp on the 15th. I believe this will be one of the most talented soccer teams we have ever had at Foothill College. Coach Flannery said, "I am really excited to work with this special group of players for the 2011 season. We have a good group of returners who have great leadership skills and our incoming freshman are all very positive and upbeat. I am looking forward to seeing these student-athletes come together and play beautiful soccer."

Foothill College Finishes Incredible 2011 Spring Season

Foothill College recently finished an incredible spring season. First, Foothill College hosted Holy Names University; HNU is one of the best NAIA soccer programs in Northern California. Both teams play very entertaining soccer. Each team had numerous chances. It was great to see ex foothill College star GK, Tiffany Irizarry starting for HNU. Tiffany Irizarry the HNU GK played very well and kept FC from scoring.

Second, the FC team played San Jose State University, in Spartan Stadium. Coach Flannery said, "This was an amazing experience for our team. To get and opportunity to play a strong NCAA Div I program was very exciting for our team." FC played very well and was able to keep the score close even in the last few minutes of the game. SJSU was loaded with talent and again had an ex FC player, All American Stephanie Bales, played for SJSU. Coach Flannery said, "To me, I thought the play of the game was watching Stephanie Bales and Patty Vega battle it out 1 vs. 1 on the soccer field. Stephanie was great to watch, she was flashy and dynamic, she would need to be however to try and beat the leagues best defender in Patty Vega. The play ended with Patty having to make a last second slide tackle to save a goal for our team."

FC also had a few good chances especially a first half break away that just missed wide. The last game of the year was against NCAA Div I Cal Poly SLO. Cal Poly has a great team. They moved the ball well and were in great shape. After the first half it was 1 to 1. Brittany Huth made a great angle run from the left side of the field. Laura Angulo switched the field and then played a great through ball to Brittany. Brittany one touched it to the far post to score the goal. As the game went on it was nice to see the two teams battle. Cal Poly had more possession but FC played very tough defense and Mikaela Jakobsson the FC GK made some very nice saves.

We played each spring season game to give our players an opportunity to play at the top level, give our players another chance to get recruited, and lastly to give our sophomores a few great memories. It was wonderful to see how far our team has come and to see our players holding their own against some of the best players in the country.

Foothill College 2010 season recap

This was another great year for the Foothill College women's soccer team. The team won the Coast Conference Championship for the third straight year and finished the season with their highest ranking ever. They were ranked #6 in Northern California, which made them the highest ranked community college in the Bay Area. The team's overall record was 16 wins, 4 losses and 2 ties. The Lady Owls scored 61 goals this year and only had 15 goals against.

Besides the team's success Foothill College also had individual success. Karina Cavanna, a three-year team captain won MVP for the Coast Conference league and Patty Vega won Defender of the Year for the Coast Conference. Karina, Patty, Kelsey Poulsen, Jackie Ryan, Shauna Saneinejad and Amanda Lopez were all voted to the First Team all league. Deniz High and Mikaela Jakobsson, the Foothill College GK's, combined for 13 shut outs.

Coach Flannery said, "It is hard for me to say good bye to these sophomores. This special group of players has made coming to work each day very enjoyable for my staff and me. Their positive attitudes, work rate and confidence helped this team reach heights never before reached at Foothill College. I will miss each one of them."

Current Season Highlights

#6 Foothill College gets to Elite 8 of the Northern California playoffs but lose 1 to 0 vs #3 American River.
Foothill College played very well on the road at American River. ARC was a very strong team and look comfortable playing in the playoffs and at this high level. FC was very nervous at first and took a while to warm up. Every 15 minutes it looked like FC was building steam.

At half time the score was still 0 to 0. The second half started and FC started to get a few good opportunities. ARC countered on one and was able to slip a ball past the FC GK. This really woke FC's offense up and for the rest of the game FC dominated. With 7 minutes to go in the game FC got three very dangerous opportunities. One on a corner kick and two through the run of play. One shot was stopped on the end line by an ARC defender and another stopped on the end line by a diving ARC GK.

Coach Flannery said, "I really thought one of those shots was going in. Had we scored there it would have been tough to stop us. We just kept getting better and better as the game went on. I wish we had a few more minutes of regulation or could have relaxed and played our game a bit earlier. ARC is ranked 3rd in the state and were definitely a good team. I was very proud of our player’s hard work and their determination. These young ladies fought as hard as possible for 90 minutes and came very close to upsetting one of the best teams in the country."

Foothill College wins their first round playoff game, 1 to 0 over Skyline College
The game started at 2pm on Saturday the 20th at Canada College. The game was played on a turf field thankfully, as the freezing cold wind, rain and hail were almost unbearable. For most of the game if not all of the game it rained and hailed. The wind was also very strong and pushed most passes out of bounds.

Foothill College got on the board early with a goal on a corner kick. The ball was crossed to the near post and Ruby Robles was able to flick it on to the back post with her foot. The Skyline defender was able to get to the ball first and as she tried to clear it, Jackie Ryan jumped in front and was able to block the ball into the goal. The rest of the first half Skyline fought back and almost scored a goal or two.

The Second half started and FC was still leading 1 to 0 when the referee gave the Coast Conference player of the year Karina Cavanna her second yellow card. Foothill had to play the last 40 minutes of the game down a player. Skyline seemed to never tire and worked very hard to try and find the equalizer but the Foothill College team defense was able to step up their level of play, and did not allow Skyline to score. The FC Gk's Mikaela Jakobsson and Deniz High were determined to not let Skyline score and they were able to keep them out of the goal for their combined 13th shout out in 21 total games this year.

Coach Flannery said, "I am very happy for these young women. Skyline brought it today and when you mix that with the wind and hail it was a really tough game. Either team could have won today. I was happy to see the FC girls step it up when we went down to 10 players. This team has so much heart and today they really showed it."

20101115091158.jpgFoothill over Chabot, 3 - 0
On October 15, Foothill College played Chabot College to a 3 - 0 shutout at home. The game started off very evenly with both teams having good possession. Neither team was very dangerous when it came to scoring, until the 20th minute when Laura Angulo ripped a shot from 10 yards out. The assist was from Amanda Boyle, Amanda made a nice back pass to Laura. 10 minutes later Foothill got back on the board when Ruby Robles made a nice pass to Karina Cavanna. Karina was able to receive the ball nicely and then shoot the ball over the Chabot GK.

The Chabot GK was playing off her line and Karina was able to place it passed her. In the second half Angela Bell scored a sitter-goal. Angela started the play with a good first touch flick to Julia Landholt. Julia then faked out two Chabot defenders and very unselfishly played it back to a wide-open Angela 5 yards away from the GK. Both Deniz High and Mikaela Jakobsson were able to combine for another shut out.

Foothill is now 9 - 2 - 4 and in first place in their league by 2 games. Coach Flannery said, "I thought our team defense was very good today. We also moved the ball nicely and rarely gave it away. Our ability to be dangerous in the Chabot 18 yard box needed to be better but overall we played a good game today."

"The two girls are long time friends and their ability to read each other is at a high level" coach Flannery said. Owen also thought, "That Skyline was a strong team with two great players on offense. Our defense has been amazing this year and the fact that they were able to stop the powerful Skyline offense was great to see. Our GK now have combined for 7 shut outs out of 12 games. They too are playing very well."

20101018081011.jpgFoothill Loses to Cabrillo College
Foothill College suffers first loss to league opponent in almost 2 years losing 0 - 1. The game was played on a very wet muddy grass field which made It hard for either team to play good soccer.

Cabrillo did a good job of defending in a 4 - 5 - 1 system and counter attacked well. Cabrillo has one of the best Forwards in the league and she made it tough on the FC defenders. Deniz High came up with a huge save on a break away late in the game and Cabrillo scored on a corner kick where both the FC defender and FC GK slipped and fell on way to try and get the ball. FC had a few good chances. Karina Cavanna had a header on the goal line that went over the goal post, Angela Bell had two nice far shots that just missed and FC could not take advantage of 5 corner kicks and 3 free kicks.

Coach Owen said, "This was a frustrating game for us because we could not play our style of soccer on this terrible field. We would have worn studs but we thought we were going to play on the turf field. Cabrillo did a great job against us and their forward is a great player. I look forward to playing them again as I thought they were a good team. Cabrillo's head coach Mike always does a great job of preparing his team."

20101018081029.jpgLady Owls Beat West Valley 2 - 0

Foothill College scored first when Erin Bedell was able to play a very nice pass to Shuree Irizarry behind the West Valley defense. Shuree used her speed and quickness to separate from the defenders. She then took a quick shot passed the GK and into the far post.

The half ended 1 to 0. Deniz High the FC goalkeeper was able to keep WV off the scoreboard. In the second half FC picked up the pace and applied a bit more pressure on WV. WV was able to use their skill to play out of the pressure FC applied but WV was unable to get many shot off in the attacking third. Mikaela Jakobsson was able to keep the shutout alive with a big save with a few minutes left in the game. She took a cleat to the rib cage but was able to hold onto the ball.

As the game came to an end and it looked like the final score would end up 1 to 0, but Munvir Dhillon FC left back was able to take a 40-yard far shot. She placed it over the WV GK's head for the final goal of the game. Munvir Dhillon received a back pass from Brittany Huth off a corner kick.

Coach Flannery said, "WV did a great job on defense. They made scoring goals very tough for us today. We had a few great chances but the WV GK wasn't going to let much past her. I thought our girls proved a lot today by winning on the road when are shots weren't falling. Most teams would have quit or argued with each other but our girls just dug deep and kept fighting." FC record is now 7 wins, 1 loss and 3 ties.

Sunday September 26th the Foothill College women's soccer team attends the Women's Professional Soccer league championship game. The FC Gold Pride played the Philadelphia Independence at Cal State East Bay.

From the start of the game the FC Gold Pride dominated the game. They were able to use their defenders for possession and their defenders were good enough to switch the point of attack at will. The Pride were also able to use their midfielders positioning off the ball to pick apart the Independence defense but what truly made the FC Gold Pride unstoppable was their forwards.

They were able to penetrate off the dribble, pass, cross or shot. Marta, Sinclair and O'hara were almost unstoppable. Coach Flannery said, "The Gold Pride taught us a lot about how the game should be played. We learned and got better today by watching them play. It was also a great team bonding experience. Our players really enjoyed watching them play. The Gold Pride were the best women's soccer team I have ever seen play." FC Gold Pride won the game 4 to 0.

FC also did a great job of changing the point of attack by switching the field with long accurate passes. Coach Owen Flannery said, "Foothill College played the best game they have played so far this year. It seems like with each game we are getting better and better." In the 15th minute Karina Cavanna was able to play a nice cross to Shuree Irizarry, Shuree then shot it to the far post and was able to get it past EVC goalie. 5 minutes later Shuree returned the favor and gave Karina a very nice cross, Karina was able to hit a hard shot past a diving EVC goalkeeper.

Foothill ties Solano College
September 15th Foothill College played Solano College. Solano was ranked #1 in Northern California last year and this year they have another tough team. We played at Solano and the kick off was at 4 pm. The game ended 0 to 0 but both teams played well. Foothill College's defense and possession was much improved. FC was able to pressure the ball defensively all over the field and they were able to keep possession under pressure, these were the two things FC has struggled with so far this year. Foothill has been very good on set plays and counter attacks but today showed they can also possess the ball. The FC team did a great job of switching the point of attack and could put multiple passes together. Unfortunately the Foothill College had a few lingering injuries which hurt us in today's match.

Angela Bell forward, out with pulled groin
Amanda Boyle forward, out with sprained ankle
Shuree Irizarry forward, out pulled groin
Kelsey Burke center mid, out with strained MCl
Munvir Dhillon outside defender, out with bronchitis
Amanda Lopez center defender played, but was limited with broken arm in cast
Karina Cavanna center mid and captain, played but had to come out with hurt ankle
Kelsey Poulsen center mid, had to come out with pulled hamstring
Erin Bedell center mid and captain, had to come out because of a hip injury
Ruby Robles forward, had to come out with sprained ankle
Laura Angulo center mid, had to come out because of a concussion
Shauna Saneinejad defender, had to come because of a sprained knee

Solano played Foothill College tough and Foothill College was already beat up after playing two of the best teams in the country Santa Rosa and Cypress. Coach Owen Flannery said, "Today we showed our depth and overall team skill, we played one of the top teams in California to a tie on the road with only 4 subs. The good news is we should get everyone healthy in a week or two and now that the offense is coming together we should be a very strong team. Our league starts next week and to us this is the most important part of the season. We have been fortunate enough to win the league title two years in a row and we hope to be able to compete again this year for our third straight championship."

20101018081043.jpgFoothill loses to Cypress College
Friday September 10th 2010, we played Cypress College from Southern California. They were a very talented team. “They were the best community college team I have seen in my 4 years at Foothill College.” They were athletic, deep with talent, fit, skilled and well coached. We fought them as hard as we could but with a few key injuries and the heat they proved to be more then we could handle today.

They scored one goal in the first half but had many chances. Deniz High had a great game and made some nice saves. In the second half Foothill College played much better and started to create their own chances. They came very close to scoring on a set play but the Cypress GK came out hard and fast and made a nice save. Cypress would score 2 more goals late once Foothill College decided to press to try and tie things up. Coach Flannery said, “Cypress was a great teacher to both myself and this team. We will be much better because of this game. They showed us where we need to get and what we need to do to get there.”

Foothill Ties Santa Rosa 2-2
Today September 8th Foothill College women's soccer played Santa Rosa. The game ended in a 2 to 2 tie. Foothill College got on the board first with a break away goal from Angela Bell. Karina Cavanna was able to pass an angled ball through the Santa Rosa defense and Angela was able to run it down and finish it to the far corner. The next two goals came from a very talented Santa Rosa team. They scored one on a corner kick to the far post and one on a nice far shot to the top corner.

Foothill started the game off very strong but died out in the last 15 minutes of the first half. Santa Rosa was able to pick their game up and they ended up dominating Foothill College for the next 30 minutes. As the game came closer and closer to finishing Foothill really started to force their offensive game on Santa Rosa. Foothill scored their second goal of the game on a corner kick that freshman Kimmy Denne was able to flick to the far post where Jackie Ryan was able to slam it home with her left foot. With 5 minutes to go Foothill College had two 1 on 1 breakaways with the Santa Rose GK and both times the SR GK was able to come up big with the save.

Coach Owen said, “If we can play a bit more as a team on offense we can become a much stronger and more dangerous team. Once our players trust each other and pass to each other more we will become a very high scoring offense I believe.” Santa Rosa is currently ranked 6th in the state of California. They have a 2 to 1 win over Solano and a 1 to 1 tie against Santa Barbara.

Foothill College plays Cypress from Southern California this Friday at Cubberley community center. Cypress is always one of the best teams in the country so this should be a great challenge for Foothill College.

Foothill College vs Diablo Valley College
Foothill College played Diablo Valley College at DVC. The game started at 2pm and we played on an artificial turf field. It was very hot but both teams were still able to play at a relatively high level.

In the first half Karina Cavanna was able to split two defenders with a nice through ball. Angela Bell was able to time her run and get in behind the defense. Angela one touched to the far post for a very nice early goal. She scored this goal in the first 15 minutes of the game. Angela almost had a few other goals and really showed to be a dominant player in today's match.

In the second half Foothill was able to use the two Kelsey's to score early. Kelsey Poulsen was able to deliver a nice angle ball over the top of the defense and Kelsey Burke was able to receive the ball with a nice first touch and slip the ball past the GK to the far post. It was Kelsey Burkes second goal in two games. Not bad for a freshman. Final score, Foothill over DVC 2-0.

Coach Flannery said, "In today's game we finally saw what Foothill College could do when they played together. For about 30 minutes today we looked like a very strong team. Hopefully we will continue to progress and reach our full potential.

Next week we play two of the best teams in the Country. Santa Rosa who is always ranked top 5 in Northern California comes to town on Wednesday and then we finish the week with Cypress who is always one of the top teams in Southern California."

Foothill College vs SF City College
Today, September 1st, we played SF City. SF is a much improved team. Their coach Gabe is doing a wonderful job of recruiting and coaching. We were only able to score 2 goals today on them because of their lock down defense. We scored one in each half.

In the first half SF City played very well and proved to us that they would not be an easy team to beat. We only had one shot on frame in the first half and it was a goal that came from a corner kick. Karina assisted to Kimmy Denne a freshman defender. She scored it far post off her head.

The second goal came in the second half. Karina beat a player down the side line and crossed it to another freshman Kelsey Burke and she buried it first touch.

We didn't play our best today but we got better as the game went on and we were able to squeak out a win on the road. Coach Flannery said, "This was a very hard first game. We never got into an offensive rhythm today. We had about 15 minutes of incredible soccer in the second half but beside that short amount of time we had to work very hard for everything."

Foothill College vs Dominican University
We played Dominican University on August 22nd in a friendly exhibition game. It was a very competitive game that ended in a 1 to 1 tie.

Dominican is a strong 4 year university in Marin. Last year they won about half of their games in a very strong NCAA Div II league. We scored first on a pass from Angela Bell to Karina Cavanna. Karina shot from outside the 18 yard box and buried it upper corner. Dominican scored a few minutes later on a free kick that hit the post and they got the rebound for the goal. Both teams played well and either team could have won. Coach Flannery said, "It was great to see our girls play so well against a 4 year university. This is a very strong team and when we put it all together the sky's the limit."
