What you’ve heard: You must have heard that Russia is famous for snow and bears, Brazil has its spectacular beaches and caipirinhas, Hong Kong is full of skyscrapers, Indonesia has Bali and a lot of natural disasters, right?
What you may not know: There is a lot more to know about each country and culture that lies beneath the common stereotype. Come to find out what it is!

Would you like to represent your country during this fair to the Foothill community? A small budget is available to cover your expenses for each table. The following countries have signed up so far: Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Mexico, Russia, Portugal, United Arab Emirates, Korea, Japan, Ukraine, and….We hope you can add to this list!

The Country Fair Planning Meeting will be held on Friday, October 23 at 3:00 pm in the Altos Room – please join to find out all the details.
Preventing the spread of infection during flu season is a top priority at Foothill College. Students are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated for prevention and so that the campus can avoid a major breakout.
Foothill will offer on-campus H1N1 and Seasonal Influenza vaccinations to currently enrolled students at no charge in November.
Please check the following site to see who qualifies as a first-priority group and for an updated vaccination schedule.

Current students: Are you thinking about applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT)? If so, now is a good time to attend our Practical Training seminar and get all the information you need to prepare your OPT application.
New students: This is your chance to get all the information about employment and practical training options available for international students (Curricular Practical Training, CO-OP, CO-OP Education, Internships, OPT).
The next practical training workshop will be held on Thursday, November 12 from 10:00 am -11:30 am in Room 5982.
If you want to change your major, you need to complete a Change of Record Form in the International Student Office in Room 5922. We will issue a new I-20 reflecting the new major. An email notification will be sent to you when your I-20 is ready to be picked up.
The International Programs Office is planning activities to celebrate International Education Week (IEW), November 17-21. IEW is an annual initiative mandated by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote the value of international education and to foster global awareness. Foothill College is proud to be joining other esteemed colleges across the country in celebrating IEW in order to enhance a global perspective in campus life and to strengthen mutual understanding.
If you would like to be a part of planning and organizing activities for IEW, we welcome your input! Volunteers will also be needed to help set up for the events, organize food and drinks, advertise, provide music and decorations, and more!

Paul Krugman is the winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Economics and a liberal Op-Ed columnist for the New York Times. He is a Princeton University professor of Economics and International Affairs, a centenary professor at the London School of Economics, as well as a frequent guest on TV talk shows and panels. Krugman was also voted sixth in Prospect Magazine’s 2005 global poll of the world’s top 100 intellectuals.

ASFC and International Programs are sponsoring the annual Thanksgiving Feast for students away from home on Tuesday, November 24 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm in the Campus Center Dining Room.
All international students are invited for a free Thanksgiving Feast with traditional food such as turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and more! Join friends, classmates, staff, and faculty in celebrating this traditional American holiday. You won’t leave hungry!

Please note that the International Programs Office, Rooms 5922 and 5403, will be closed on Friday, November 13 in observance of the Veterans Day Holiday. Foothill College will be closed, and classes will not meet.
You don’t have to say it. Foothill College already knows that many students are struggling to afford tuition costs. That is why the Financial Aid Office is here to assist students by providing scholarships and other opportunities to help pay for your educational expenses.
Another round of scholarships will be given away this year, with the application deadline for most scholarships in the middle of February 2010. So don’t forget to check the Financial Aid website to see which scholarships you are qualified for! International students are eligible to apply for any scholarships that don’t state U.S. citizenship or California residency as a requirement. Every year some scholarships are not even awarded, so please browse through all available scholarship opportunities and apply for those that you qualify for.
Fall is an exciting time for transfer students! In the Transfer Center, we provide workshops to help you complete a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG), fill out a university application, or help with writing an essay for college admission. Consult our workshop schedule. Many universities also send their representatives to meet with you individually. You can sign up to meet with one of these helpful individuals in our Transfer Center.
Attend Transfer Day on October 28, in the Campus Center Quad between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm no matter when you plan to transfer. Over 50 universities will have information tables. Pick up brochures and ask questions! There will also be many workshops available on that day and on other days during that week. The complete schedule will be available soon.

San Francisco State University - New International Student Admissions Representative: Welcome Izy Alilin, who will be coming to Foothill campus on a regular basis to answer all of your SFSU transfer questions! His next visit will be November 1 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm for individual appointments. From 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, he will conduct a CSU application workshop and will provide assistance for any international student applying to any CSU. Sign up for an individual appointment today! October 22: Career Lecture about Human Resources
Guest speaker Cheryl P. Miller holds a Professional in Human Resources certification and has worked in human resources for over seven years both in the United States and in Australia. She has been employed by both an engineering and a technology company, and currently has a position at Stanford University. Cheryl has vast experience in operations, talent management, employee relations, college recruitment, and various other areas in human resources.
Guest speaker Kristel Nazzal worked in human resources for a multinational organization for over five years in various capacities including employee relations, recruitment, training, and analyst work. One of those years was spent in England, where she offered support to colleagues in over 15 countries. Kristel earned a Professional in Human Resources certification, an industry credential for human resource professionals.
November 5: Career Lecture about Psychology
Guest speaker Dr. Paul Marcille is President of the Santa Clara County Psychology Association and Director of a Bachelor of Science in Psychology program. He will be sharing his experiences as a Clinical Psychologist as well as providing guidance for students who would like to major in the field. Dr. Marcille obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago Medical School and was Vice President, Dean of Student Affairs and Chairman of the Psychology Department at the American University of Paris, France.
December 3: Career Lecture about Management
Guest speaker Nader Vasseghi has been working in Silicon Valley in the hi-tech industry since 1981 and has held leadership and executive roles in public and private companies. He is a serial entrepreneur and sold his last start-up company, AuroraNetics, to Cisco in 2001. He was Senior Director and General Manager of a business unit in Cisco prior to founding his new start-up company, SelfOptima, in the healthcare IT space.

The International Programs is one office providing services to international students, and is housed in two locations on campus: Room 5922 and Room 5403. Unfortunately, we do not currently have a large enough space to accommodate our entire office. We are anxiously awaiting our move to the new location in the center of campus in about a year!
Room 5922 (International Student Office – ISO): This is the location for most general questions about F-1 international student admission to Foothill and concerns related to maintaining valid F-1 status in the U.S. from immigration, passports, visas, health insurance, employment, travel to academic issues.
