Theatre Technology     2009-2010

The Foothill College Theatre Technology program prepares the theatre student for entry-level positions in professional and community theatre and to transfer to a four-year institution. A comprehensive and intensive two-year program, Theatre Technology offers the student the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of a wide variety of practical career opportunities.
Students interested in production and stage management, theatre design, and the creations of sets, props, costumes, lights, sound, and special effects are able to participate in both daytime lecture and laboratory classes and evening production experiences. Foothill Theatre Arts department offers six major productions during the academic year and Theatre Technology students participate in the hands-on experience of creating all of the technical elements for these productions. During the summer quarter, technical theatre students may participate in the production of a major musical.
The second year of training offers the student the opportunity to continue the study of Theatre Technology by enrolling in advanced classes in the Foothill College Theatre Arts Department in addition to participating in a theatre internship program at one of several Bay Area leading theatre companies. Foothill College maintains direct contact with many Bay Area theatre companies and special internships may be arranged for each student in the student's area of choice.

Career Opportunities
Entry-level technical theatre jobs encompass six basic fields of study and areas of employment: scene shop technician, costume shop technician, theatre electrician, properties artisan, stage management, and scenic artist. Theatre technicians can expand their opportunities by pursuing entry-level technical positions in film and video production.
