Foothill College Names New Head Men's Basketball Coach
A Community College Alum, Stanley Brings Teaching & Coaching Experience to the Owls
Foothill College announces Matt Stanley, 33, of San Jose, will lead the Foothill College Men's Basketball
Program for the 2013-2014 season, according to Foothill Kinesiology & Athletics Division Dean/Athletics
Director Susan Gutkind. Last year, the Owls finished the regular season with a 22-5 record and were ranked
fifth in the state.
Coach Stanley, who begins the one-year temporary coaching assignment at Foothill July 15, has served
as head coach of the Cañada College Men's Basketball Program in Redwood City since 2011. In addition
to coaching duties, Stanley will teach Foothill physical education and kinesiology courses at
the campus in Los Altos Hills.
"Coach Stanley truly understands what it means to work in a community college program with young men.
He understands what it is to be part of a cohesive team," Gutkind said. "His teaching style is
particularly outstanding, and he brings an impressive level of consistency and
professionalism to our program. We're excited to have him on board as head coach."
An assistant coach for Foothill's program since 2008, Stanley replaces Shanan Rosenberg.
Rosenberg, who has taken a one-year leave of absence from Foothill, was named head coach
at Linfield College, an NCAA Division III program, in McMinnville, Ore., in April 2013.
While serving as Foothill's assistant coach, Stanley helped the Owls to a California
Community College Athletic Association Elite 8 appearance in 2010, and to Round 16
in 2008. In five years at Foothill, 11 of Stanley's players earned scholarships to continue
playing at four-year institutions, and more than 98 percent of his players graduated with
college degrees. With his assistance, the Owls finished in the Top 20 in California three times.
Prior to coaching at Foothill, Stanley served as a volunteer assistant coach at the
University of Nevada in 2005-2006 under Mark Fox. The Wolf Pack won the Western
Athletic Conference Championship and was ranked in the Top 25 for the majority
of the year. The team also earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.
Stanley completed two seasons as a graduate assistant at California State University,
Chico, under Puck Smith, where he concurrently earned a master's degree in physical
education. During Stanley's tenure, CSU Chico twice advanced to the NCAA Division II
Regionals in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005.
As a player, Stanley himself was a California Community College student athlete at
Shasta College. A two-year starter, he played a vital role on a Golden Valley
Conference Championship team in 2001. After completing an associate in arts degree,
he transferred to Division III Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore. He helped
the Pioneers to a Northwest Conference Championship and a trip to the Elite Eight
in 2002. A native of Chico, Stanley resides with his family in San Jose.
The Foothill Owls begin pre-season class in September. Coast Conference play
beings in January. For more information, call Gutkind at (650) 949-7741.
