Meet the Coach: Matt Stanley

Coach Matt Stanley A Community College Alum, Stanley Brings Teaching & Coaching Experience to the Owls

Coming off one the best finishes in school history, Matt Stanley, 35, will again look to lead the Owls to new heights during 2015-2016 season.  

"Coach Stanley truly understands what it means to work in a community college program with young men. He understands what it is to be part of a cohesive team,”  said AD Mike Teijeiro. "His teaching style is particularly outstanding, and he brings an impressive level of consistency and professionalism to our program. 

Prior to becoming the Head Coach at Foothill, Stanley served as Head Coach at Cañada College for 2 years where he doubled the win the total from year 1 to year 2 and 5 Colt players received scholarships to compete at the NCAA level. 

As an assistant coach for Foothill's program since 2006-2011,  Stanley helped the Owls to a California Community College Athletic Association Elite 8 appearance in 2010, and to Round 16 in 2008. In 5 years at Foothill, 11 of Stanley's players earned scholarships to continue playing at four-year institutions, and more than 98percent of his players graduated with college degrees. With his assistance, the Owls finished in the Top 20 in California five times.

A volunteer assistant coach at the University of Nevada in 2005-2006 under Mark Fox. The Wolf Pack won the Western Athletic Conference Championship and was ranked in the Top 25 for the majority of the year. The team also earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Stanley completed two seasons as a graduate assistant at California State University, Chico, under Puck Smith, where he concurrently earned a master's degree in physical education. During Stanley's tenure, CSU Chico twice advanced to the NCAA Division II Regionals in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005.

As a player, Stanley himself was a California Community College student athlete at Shasta College. A two-year starter, he played a vital role on a Golden Valley Conference Championship team in 2001. After completing an associate in arts degree, he transferred to Division III Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore. He helped the Pioneers to a Northwest Conference Championship and a trip to the Elite Eight in 2002. 

A native of Chico, Stanley resides with his wife Ashley and 2 sons in Preston, and Lucas in San Mateo.
