Former Foothill softball assistant coach Deanna Mauer died Wednesday evening, April 27, after being rear-ended in a multi-car crash in Southern California. Mauer was just 23-years-old.

According to the Orange County Coroner's Office and reported by the Orange County Register, Ms. Mauer was rear-ended on the 405 Freeway Wednesday morning. She was rear-ended by a car that had failed to stop for the slowed traffic, according the California Highway Patrol. Ms. Mauer was forced into a Porsche in front of her and ended up in the center divider.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Foothill Head Coach Collin Pregliasco said "Deanna was a special young woman who played a significant role in many of our player's and coach's lives. Our entire program is hurting with the news of this loss. She will be greatly missed".

Before starting her coaching career, Deanna pitched the 2008 and 2009 seasons at San Jose State after pitching two seasons at Central Arizona College. She holds the school record for strikeouts in a game with 15 in a game against Saint Mary's in 2008. Deanna ranks sixth all-time in strikeouts with 223 in just two seasons.

Service information for Ms. Mauer is still pending. San Jose State softball will honor Ms. Mauer next weekend, May 6-7, when the team hosts Hawaii for a three-game series at SJSU Field.
