Former Professional Volleyball Player Katy Ripp Named Women’s Volleyball Coach

Foothill College has hired former Stanford and Santa Clara University assistant coach Katy Ripp as women’s volleyball coach and physical education instructor. The full-time position begins in June. A former professional player and Academic All American at University of the Pacific, Ripp joins Foothill with the charge of building a high-quality women’s volleyball program at Foothill. “Coach Ripp brings an outstanding combination of professional volleyball experience, university coaching experience and academic excellence to our program,” said Dean of Physical Education and Human Performance Sue Gatlin. “Foothill College student-athletes will benefit tremendously from her knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to student success.”

Ripp served as assistant women’s volleyball coach at Stanford from July 2002 through February 2004, at Santa Clara University from July 2001 through July 2002 and at CSU Sonoma from March 1999 through July 2001. She is currently a junior-level coach for the Vision Volleyball Club in Los Gatos.

Ripp played professionally in the Bud Light Professional Beach Volleyball Tour from 1993 to 1997 and was named the Bud Light Surprise Player of the Year in 1993. She played in professional indoor leagues in Italy from 1996 to 1997 and for the National Volleyball Association’s Orange County Diggers in 1996. She played in the Associated Volleyball Professional Beach Volleyball Doubles League from 1998 to 2002 and along with partner Stephanie Cox, placed a career-best third on the BVA Tour at San Diego in 2000.

She played collegiate volleyball at the University of the Pacific from 1989 to 1993, serving as team captain in the 1992-1993 season. In 1993, during her senior year she earned Academic All American honors, was named UOP NCAA Woman Athlete of the Year and graduated cum laude with a major in sociology.

“I am very excited about coaching and teaching at Foothill College,” Ripp said. “Working with young women who are transitioning into their adult lives provides an opportunity to make a positive impact. Our program will not only be focused on success on the court but also on supporting the student-athletes in their academic success at Foothill. This upcoming season will be of particular interest as we restart the women's program. I look forward to our competition in the Coast Conference beginning in the fall of 2004.”
