Anthropology At Foothill College

SkullsThe Department of Anthropology at Foothill College offers an excellent range of courses that expose students to all facets of anthropology, including cultural anthropology, archaeology, human evolution, forensics, medical anthropology, magic and religion, lost civilizations, and modern and ancient cultures of California and the world. Our faculty prepare students for anthropology majors in 4-year institutions, take students on archaeology field schools, direct independent study projects, offer an AA degree and certificates, teach honor’s sections, and give students the ability to apply what they learn in the community around them.

Silicon Valley is the hub of global technology change and its people are in the business of redefining traditional cultural barriers with technology. As the world increasingly becomes integrated it is important that we understand ourselves and others from an anthropological perspective. Employers look to see that you have developed the tools necessary to compete in the world today. You are the next generation of anthropology students, those that understand the new world in which we live and use that knowledge to improve our way of life.

Foothill Anthropology students have return to campus from our summer 2009 of archaeology on coastal California and in the Andes of South America. Successful investigations took place at Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz and the Pambamarca Fortress Complex in Ecuador. Summer 2010: Foothill Belize Program

COMING SOON MORE INFORMATION!!!!
First INFO MEETINGS IN DECEMBER.

Next summer June 27 - July 24, 2010 kicks off the new program of archaeology and cultural experiences among the Maya of Belize.

Join Anthropology Professor Sam Connell on his research project in the heart of the ancient and modern Maya world. The Caribbean country of Belize is an incredibly welcoming tropical tapestry of many cultures. Dr. Connell has been conducting research in Belize since 1992 and returns this summer with a team of archaeologists to continue investigations at the sites of El Aguacate in western Belize.

The Belize Program, like the Ecuador program which will run again next year, will balance community development and ethnographic experiences with archaeology.

Our program is divided into four segments.

  • 1 week of orientation in Belize and Maya culture and archaeology.
  • 1 week of living on a Maya farm in a camp-like setting at the Chaa Creek Resort.
  • 1 week of service learning training, research and application.
  • 1 week of field excavations.

The main idea behind this model is to conduct a full spectrum training in anthropology, with the experience ranging from ethnography and applied anthropology to archaeological survey and excavations. Belize is an amazing multicultural location with Creoles, Maya, Latinos, and Mennonites all living in one small country the size of Massachusetts. It is truly an amazing place and we are happy to share it with you.

We want to emphasize that this is not a full time archaeology field school, and provides more of a rounded in-country experience that focuses on anthropology as a field of research with many possible avenues. If you are a student who wishes to have a taste of a few different kinds of anthropology in a beautiful location and wants to feel like you are directly contributing in some manner or another to benefit society, then this is for you.
