Child Development     (2009-2010)

The Child Development Program prepares students for success in any area of Child Development. Courses and certificates are designed to ensure that students: 1) meet the hiring requirements for the level of work chosen, 2) meet the requirements needed to obtain permits to become a Child Development Assistant Associate Teacher, Teacher, and Site Supervisor in state licensed, publicly funded, center-based child care and development programs, and 3) are prepared to go on in their education and obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree.Kids Jumping
Career Opportunities
The Associate in Art degree in Child Development allows the student to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue further studies in such fields as child development, human development, child psychology, social work, and education. Students planning to transfer should check the specific requirements of the institutions to which they plan to transfer.

Units required for Major: 40
Units required for Certificate: 24-80

Associate Degree Requirements:
• English proficiency: ENGL 1A, ESL 26 or equivalent.
• Mathematics proficiency: MATH 105 or equivalent.
A minimum of 90 units required to include:
• All General Education requirements
• Core courses (15 Units)
• Support courses (22 Units)
• Elective courses (3 Units)
• Other graduation requirements as appropriate.

NOTE: All courses pertaining to the major must be taken for a letter grade. In addition, a GPA of 2.0 or higher is required in all Core and Support courses for the Degree or Certificates. 55% of the major coursework must be completed at Foothill College. Coursework that applies to permits or licenses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.

This certificate meets the requirements for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Child Development Associate Teacher Permit.

This certificate is awarded after completion of the Degree Core, Support and Elective requirements (40 units)
and 24 unitsof General Education courses (one course from each of the following categories):
1. English/Language Arts
2. Math or Science
3. Social Sciences
4. Humanities and/or Fine Arts

Program Supervision & Mentoring Certificate of Achievement (80 units)
This certificate meets the requirements for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Child Development Site Supervisor Permit.

Completion of the Child Development Teacher Certificate of Achievement (64 units) And the following:
CHLD 86A Mentoring & Professional Development of Early Childhood Professionals (4 units)
CHLD 90B Administration & Supervision: Designing & Starting Child Care Facilities (4 units)

DE ANZA COURSES: All same or similar De Anza courses may be substituted (by petition) for Foothill Business and Social Science (BSS) courses and Social Science General Education requirements, regardless of units. The unit total for the A.A. degree remains the same.
