NEW- 9/16/09 Due to high student demand additional seats have been opened in Physical Geography (GEOG01.01), Tu/Th 10AM. This is a modular hybrid class that allows you to take as much or as little of the course in an online format as you wish. For more information, please email me or come to our first class meeting Tuesday Sept. 22 at 10AM in 3401.
Physical Geography is a 5 quarter-unit course. It is offered both face to face, hybrid and online. The laboratory component of this course is also online. Labs involve using GIS (geographic information systems) as well as analyzing data collected from USGS, NASA and NOAA Students will need access to an internet browser and Adobe Acrobat software to complete the labs. All sections of Physical Geography (including face to face) use the ETUDES virtual classroom course management tool. The ETUDES virtual classroom allows students to monitor their grade, and has postings of all course handouts, study guides and laboratory assignments. The hybrid version of GEOG01 allows students to select the class format that works best with their learning style. Students have two options for class lectures. Students may read the online lectures in ETUDES and complete a 20 point skills check quiz on each lecture, or earn 20 points for the week by attending face to face class lectures. Attendance will be taken at each class meeting. Students earn 20 points by attending both lectures in a week. Attending only one lecture will earn 10 points. Attendance will be taken at each class meeting and participation assignments will also take place in class. For more information on this class format, please see the syllabus.
For more information about current course offerings, please see the schedule of classes
Students are encouraged to order their texts early so that they can begin assignments on the first day of class. This coursed uses Geosystems: An Introduction to Physical Geography 7th edition by Robert Christopherson, and Rand McNally's Goodes World Atlas (ISBN 0528853392).
Please note, the OLD (6th) edition of Geosysems (pictured below) will also work, and save you $$$. The Foothill bookstore will not order old editions, but you are encouraged to find your own copy on Amazon.com, Half.com or from other resellers before the start of the quarter. The syllabus will include reading lists for both the 6th and 7th editions.
The library also has copies of both the atlas and the text on reserve.
