Classes meet; campus offices are open. September 11, 2012, marks the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, as well as a federally recognized national day of service and remembrance. On Sept. 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four commercial U.S. jetliners, deliberately crashing two of the planes into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center and a third place into the Pentagon. After learning of the other attacks, passengers and crew members on the fourth plane attempted to commandeer control, and the plane was crashed into an empty field in Western Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed on that day—the single largest loss of life from a foreign attack on American soil. By a joint resolution approved Dec. 18, 2001, Congress designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day (Public Law 107-89). On Patriot Day, we remember the victims and pay tribute to the valiant firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, and ordinary citizens who risked their lives so others might live.
