Continuing Students Register for Fall

Foothill College Fall Quarter 2014 classes begin the week of Sept. 22 and continue through Dec. 12 unless otherwise noted in the searchable class schedule. California residents pay $31 per unit plus basic fees for Foothill classes; fees are due at the time you register. Review more important registration dates and deadlines.

New State Laws Change Priority Registration: New state laws now define enrollment priorities at all California community colleges, and may affect when you can register for classes. Effective Fall 2014, new, fully matriculated* students who have completed college orientation and assessment, and have filed an official education plan, as well as continuing students in good academic standing who have not exceeded 100 units (not including basic English, math or English as a second language) now receive registration priority over students who do not meet these criteria. Schedule a counseling appointment for an educational plan, or university transfer, career and personal counseling.

This new state mandate, called the Student Success & Support Program (3SP) that is part of the Student Success Act of 2012ensures that classes are available for students who are pursuing job training, completing the associate degree and/or preparing for university transfer, and rewards students who make progress toward their educational goals. The new laws and 3SP are the legislative cornerstone of a California Community Colleges reform initiative to improve educational outcomes for students and better prepare the workforce needed for California’s economy. The legislation, SB 1456, ushers in some of the most significant improvements to the state's community college system in more than a decade.

Theatre
July 24, 2014 - August 10, 2014
On Stage: South Pacific
Vividly captures prejudice and acceptance, this story is ahead of its time
Smithwick Theater
Parking is $3; purchase permit from dispensers in any student lot.

Award-winning Foothill Music Theatre presents South Pacific July 24–Aug. 10 in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Purchase tickets online now. Vividly capturing the emotions of war, the intensity and boredom, the optimism and desperation, and the prejudice and acceptance, this is a story ahead of its time and for all time.

From the pages of James Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel came Rogers & Hammerstein's sweeping epic set on an island paradise during World War II. Winner of 10 Tony Awards in 1950, including best musical, the plot follows two parallel love stories threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. The production was also ground-breaking for its candid and progressive message on racism.

The music of South Pacific includes iconic popular standards such as Some Enchanted Evening, Younger Than Springtime, I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy, There Is Nothing Like a Dame, Happy Talk, Bali Ha'i and I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair.

The show, which was the second longest running on Broadway at the time, spawned a 1958 motion picture and has repeatedly enjoyed success in revivals and tours. In 2008 it returned to Broadway to wide critical acclaim and nearly 1,000 performances. It would win another seven Tonys that year, including best musical revival.

Parking Lots 1 and 8 provide the best access to the theatre. Patrons must purchase the required campus parking permit for $3. Purchase permit at dispensers in any student lot. Dispensers accept one-dollar bills and quarters; bring exact change. Foothill College is located off I-280 on El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills. High School Students Register for Fall
California residents pay $31 per unit; fees are due at the time you register.
Register for courses and pay fees by accessing your MyPortal.fhda.edu account.
Register early for best course selection; your fees are due at the time you register.

This new state mandate, called the Student Success & Support Program (3SP) that is part of the Student Success Act of 2012, ensures that classes are available for students who are pursuing job training, completing the associate degree and/or preparing for university transfer, and rewards students who make progress toward their educational goals.

Theatre
August 04, 2014 - August 05, 2014
6 to 9 p.m.
Auditions: Sunday in the Park with George
Presented by Foothill Music Theatre & Foothill Theatre Arts Department
Appreciation Hall (Room 1501)
Auditioners without current parking permit must purchase a day-use permit from dispensers in any student lot; bring $3 in quarters or small bills.

The Foothill College Theatre Arts Department and award-winning Foothill Music Theatre announce auditions for Sunday in the Park with George, Monday, Aug. 4, and Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Appreciation Hall (Room 1501) at Foothill College.

All roles are open, and actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Performers should prepare a 1–2 minute song in the style of the show; songs from the show are acceptable. Bring sheet music in the correct key; an accompanist will be provided. An appointment is not necessary. However, actors may be asked to do a brief cold reading from the script. Also bring a headshot and resume. This is a non-equity performance and offers no pay. Foothill College Vocal Music Arts Instructor Milissa Carey, will direct Foothill's production of Sunday in the Park with George.

Call backs are Aug. 12–14, and rehearsals begin Jan. 6. Performances dates are Feb. 19–March 8 in the Lohman Theatre.

Music & Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim
Book: James Lapine
Director: Milissa Carey, Foothill College

Music Director: Dolores Duran-Cefalu
The Story: One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter Georges Seurat won a Pulitzer Prize for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of life through art and the artist.

In the days leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatté, Georges Seurat is struggling to make meaningful art and maintaining a relationship with his lover Dot. Amid the scorn of the artistic community, Seurat's artistic ability thrives while his love diminishes. A century later, Seurat's descendant—named George and also an artist—finds himself burnt out and in search of what artistic path to follow, but he finds the answer to his future in the past.

An ensemble of strong singing actors performs this challenging and heartbreaking work about our need to connect to the past, present and future. The ground-breaking work by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, the authors of Into the Woods and Passion, contain some of their most beautiful and stirring work.

Parking Lots 1 and 8 provide the best access to Appreciation Hall. Alternately, and to avoid the stairs, park in Lot 5 and take the five-minute, level walk to the theatre. A parking permit is required at all times. Purchase permit for $3 at dispensers in any student lot. Dispensers accept one-dollar bills and quarters. If you are cast in the show, you will receive a complimentary permit for the duration of the project.

Foothill College is located off I-280 on El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills. For more audition information, access the audition link at www.foothill.edu/theatre/auditions.php.

Financial Aid
September 02, 2014
Cal Grant Secondary Deadline
Plan Accordingly to Meet the Deadline
Do not wait til the last minute to complete financial aid paperwork; plan accordingly to meet the deadline.

Submit your 2013-2014 FAFSA Renewal online at www.fafsa.ed.gov no later than Sept. 2 if you'll be attending college after Spring Quarter 2014. Cal Grant eligibility could add up to $1,473 to your Foothill College financial aid award.

Cal Grants are funded by the state with a small portion of funding from the Federal Government through the Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program (LEAP). Cal Grant awards do not have to be paid back.

If you did not submit Cal Grant application materials by the priority deadline (March 2, 2014), there is a secondary deadline, specifically for California Community College students on Sept. 2. Submit the required forms before the Sept. 2 deadline to be considered for this specific Cal Grant. Be aware that there will be a limited number of these grants available.

Upon transfer to a California four-year college or university, you may receive up to $12,192 in addition to the basic $1,473 award. There are three different Cal Grants: Cal Grant A, B and C.

  • Cal Grant A pays for tuition and fees at a four-year institution. Eligible students may place the award on reserve for up to two years while attending community college;

  • The student who is awarded Cal Grant B may receive the living allowance ($1,473) at community college; upon transfer to a four-year institution, he/she continues to receive the living allowance plus the tuition award in the same amount as the Cal Grant A;

  • Cal Grant C recipients must be enrolled in a vocational or technical program and receive $547 per year for a maximum of two years; and

  • Restrictions apply. Award amounts are subject to change.

For more information, visit the Foothill College Financial Aid Office (Building 8100), e-mail fhfinancialaidoffice@foothill.edu, call (650) 949-7245 or access www.foothill.edu/aid/index.php.

Classes meet; campus offices are open.

September 11, 2014, marks the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The day is a federally recognized national day of service and remembrance.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed on that day—the single largest loss of life from a foreign attack on American soil. By a joint resolution approved Dec. 18, 2001, Congress designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day (Public Law 107-89). On Patriot Day, we remember the victims and pay tribute to the valiant firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel and ordinary citizens who risked their lives so others might live.

Constitution Day
Classes meet; campus offices are open.

Classes meet; campus offices are open.

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day are combined events that are annually observed in the United States on Sept. 17. This event commemorates the formation and signing of the Constitution of the United States on Sept. 17, 1787.

The U.S. Department of Education provides various resources on the event as the department is responsible for implementing Constitution Day legislated mandates. Among these is the requirement for educational institutions that receive federal funds to hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on Sept. 17 each year.

On Constitution Day, an event which falls during Constitution Week (Sept. 17-23), many people in the United States recognize the anniversary of the nation's constitution and the efforts and responsibilities of all citizens. With regard to the nation's constitution, in the summer of 1787, delegates convened in Philadelphia to create "a more perfect union" and to craft the country's constitution. They worked to develop a framework that would provide balance and freedom, taking into account federal and state interests, as well as individual human rights. The delegates signed the constitution of the United States on Sept. 17 that year. By June 21, 1788, the constitution was effective, having been approved by nine of the 13 states.

Parking Lots 1 and 8 provide the best access to the theatre. Purchase permit for $3 at dispensers in any student lot. Dispensers accept one-dollar bills and quarters.

Financial Aid
March 02, 2015
Cal Grant Deadline
This Is the Priority Deadline; Plan Accordingly to Meet the Deadline
Do not wait til the last minute to complete financial aid paperwork; plan accordingly to meet the deadline.

The most important deadline for Cal Grants is March 2. Be certain that you submit your completed FAFSA and your verified Cal Grant GPA Form by the March 2 Cal Grant application deadline.

If you do not submit Cal Grant application materials by this priority deadline (March 2, 2015), there is a secondary deadline, specifically for California Community College students on Sept. 2, 2015. Be aware that a limited number of these grants is available. Upon  transfer to a California four-year college or university, you may receive up to $9,233 in addition to the basic $1,473 award.

There are three different Cal Grants: Cal Grant A, B and C. Restrictions apply.

  • Cal Grant A pays for tuition and fees at a four-year institution. Eligible students may place the award on reserve for up to two years while attending community college;

  • The student who is awarded Cal Grant B may receive the living allowance ($1,473) at community college; upon transfer to a four-year institution, he/she continues to receive the living allowance plus the tuition award in the same amount as the Cal Grant A;

  • Cal Grant C recipients must be enrolled in a vocational or technical program and receive $547 per year for a maximum of two years; and

  • Restrictions apply and amounts award are subject to change.

For more information, visit the Foothill College Financial Aid Office (Building 8100), e-mail fhfinancialaidoffice@foothill.edu, call (650) 949-7245 or access www.foothill.edu/aid/index.php.
