Description: An important part of every child’s education is learning to live and work in the global economy. This requires skills in technology, communication, collaboration, multicultural understanding. Global PBL is grounded in real-world projects that explore real problems, explore the diversity and the sameness of cultures, and create collaboration between classrooms by capitalizing on Internet technologies. In this course we’ll explore the tools available and the skills necessary for successful multi-classrooms projects. In this project-based class, we’ll discover existing projects to join and work collaboratively to create multi-classroom projects based on Common Core and state content standards that will delight, engage and excite our students. Description: Designed for the educator, hobbyist, novice graphic designers, and photographers alike, this course introduces students to the Photoshop and to image editing techniques. Learn to fix underexposed and overexposed damaged pictures, adjust colors in images, combine disparate images into one composite and much more. Achieve a solid understanding of Photoshop fundamentals and an ability to freely composite and enhance any image you can imagine. No previous experience with Adobe Photoshop is required. Registration required. 

IMPORTANT: The Photoshop software (version CS3 or higher) is required for this course. Software can be ordered through the Foothill College Bookstore or downloaded as a one-month free trial version from the Adobe website. You can also use the software for free at the KCI Multimedia Lab.

The Dream is Now is a new 30-minute documentary that's being made in real time, as this debate is unfolding, by Academy Award-winning director, Davis Guggenheim (Waiting for 'Superman'', An Inconvenient Truth). Dream gives voice to and puts a human face on the undocumented children of immigrants who are desperate to earn their citizenship and give back to the only country they've ever called "home."

Chasing Ice is the story of one man’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Within months of that first trip to Iceland, the photographer conceived the boldest expedition of his life: The Extreme Ice Survey. With a band of young adventurers in tow, Balog began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. Students enrolled in the Foothill College Theatre Arts Department present Nickel & Dimed, based on the book Nickel & Dimed, On (Not) Getting By In America by Barbara Ehrenreich, May 24 through June 9 in the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. The production is directed by Foothill College Theatre Arts Instructor Tom Gough.

Written by Joan Holden, Nickel & Dimed asks can a middle-aged, middle-class woman survive when she suddenly must make beds all day in a hotel and live on $7 an hour? Maybe. But one $7-an-hour job won't pay the rent; she’ll have to do back-to-back shifts as a chambermaid and a waitress. An acclaimed author, Ehrenreich set out to research low-wage life firsthand, confident that she was prepared for the worst. Her best-seller about her low-wage odyssey is vivid and witty, yet always deeply sobering.

Thursday evening performances are May 30 and June 6 at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening shows are May 24, 25, 31, June 1, 7 and 8 at 8 p.m. Sunday matinees are June 2 and 9 at 2 p.m.

The Foothill College Repertory Dance Company presents This Is Love, its two-hour spring dance concert directed by award-winning choreographer Bubba Gong, May 31 and June 1 at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Love Notes, the opening act, will showcase students’ original and experimental works at 7 p.m. The main performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

Foothill College Dance Director Bubba Gong, a Bay Area Theatre Critics, Drama-Logue and Dean Goodman honoree and Walt Disney discovery, will debut a new contemporary choreography to Puccini’s Tosca, as well as the world premiere of The Coronation of the Last Emperor Pu Yi. Gong will also show a sneak peak of Pi’s Lullaby, a new contemporary ballet from the Academy Award-winning film, Life of Pi, and a rousing Act One closer featuring his interpretation of the smash viral video Gangnam Style. Works by resident student choreographers include Angela Herrera’s Tito Puente-accompanied mambo and specialty act inspired by 50 Shades Of Grey; David Eastman’s lyrical ballet Smash; Kento Vo’s hip-hop Mix, Tara Hart-Rodriguez’s country-Western line dance Crank My Tractor; Bailey Donnelly’s Justin Timberlake-inspired Suit and Tie; and Miguel Ochoa’s hip-hop Thrift Shop and One from A Chorus Line. Danille Grimsby is featured in three star turns, including Country Girl, a Barbara Streisand-inspired vocal Being Good Isn’t Good Enough, and the belly dance Drama Queen. Likewise Fernando Solis has choreographed three student works featuring Britney Spears, a funk duet and a group hip-hop choreography. Kevin San Juan demonstrates the newest dance craze in Whacking. Deanna Woodman chooses ballet technique to showcase her solo Unconstrained scored with a haunting melodic cello.

Foothill’s popular dance program is distinguished by diversity in dance and excellence in inclusion, and will feature soloists from different world cultures, including Lizeth Cuevas in the Ballet folklorico-inspired Morena; Mony Ty in a dance from Cambodia; Tara Harte-Rodriguez showcasing Irish stepdance; Joce Satterberg in Hummingbird; Jessica Angel in an untitled contemporary solo; Elise Dubuisson in a contemporary dance accompanied by live percussion; Melany Montano in Tango: Scent of a Woman; Alan Luo break dances; Angela Herrera performs Jungle; and Adrian Deeve dances Try, a contemporary solo, and with David Eastman, presents a world beat hip-hop.

Gong earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University. An advocate of the arts and dance, he has served on the Silicon Valley Arts Council Board, Peninsula Community Foundation and Association of Asian Pacific American Artists. Recently, he choreographed the Emmy Awards in San Francisco streamed live to 11 countries.

Whimsical earrings and hair combs to luxe mixed media amulets and necklaces will be showcased and discussed at the Foothill Is A Gem Fundraiser hosted by the Foothill Commission Friday, May 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Campus Center Dining Room at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Many of the jewelry pieces featured at the event are from the collection of Foothill College President Judy C. Miner, Ed.D., who has assembled an impressive gallery of couture costume items from New York-based Lunch at The Ritz, as well as San Francisco-based artist Masha Archer. At 5 p.m., Dr. Miner will discuss her collection of unusual costume jewelry, and share the interesting stories behind some of the key pieces from her extensive collection.

The key stages of adulthood will be discussed at a panel presentation featuring Foothill's Director of Disabled Students Programs & Veterans Services Teresa Ong, as well as several other guest speakers from across the U.S. who work with the autism and learning differences community. The Thinking Positive About the Future panel presentation is June 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Foothill College  Campus Center Dining Room (Room 2201). Admission is free and the public is invited; parking is $3.

Panelists will discussion effective strategies to help college-age students, especially young men and women with autism and learning differences, make the successful transition to adulthood, including letting go, adjusting to college, finding success in the workplace and achieving independence. Foothill College presents its 53rd Annual Commencement Ceremony Friday, June 29, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Library Quad. The evening will feature inspirational messages from Foothill College students, faculty and staff. Tickets are not required and event parking in student lots is free this evening only. Commemorates the anniversary of the June 28, 1969, Stonewall riot in New York City, the incident that initiated the modern gay rights movement in the United States.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, law enforcement officials kept track of suspected homosexuals and places that catered to them. Police regularly raided gay bars, seizing alcohol, shutting down establishments and arresting patrons. It wasn’t uncommon for gay men and lesbians to be exposed in newspapers, fired from their jobs, jailed or sent to mental institutions.

On that June night, police entered the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York’s Greenwich Village, at 1:20 a.m. and launched a raid. While the police waited for patrol wagons to cart away the arrested suspects and the seized alcohol, the bar’s patrons began to resist. They refused to follow police orders. Men refused to show their IDs, and men dressed as women refused to accompany female officers to the bathroom to have their gender confirmed. Thirteen people were arrested, and four police officers were injured at Stonewall. The riots continued for six nights. The resistance wasn’t planned, nor were the riots that followed. Foothill College offers currently enrolled students the opportunity to participate in an exciting student research internship program. The deadline to submit complete application materials for this year’s internships is June 30. This is a unique program that matches students majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with internships at local universities, cities and companies. Be aware that internship partners are subject to change. Participating in the Foothill's STEM Internship Program is an excellent opportunity for you to conduct leading-edge research in various STEM fields, as well as gain real-world experience working with city officials and scientists in the private sector.

Minimum Requirements

• You must have a cumulative 3.00 GPA or higher in STEM classes;

• You must be enrolled in at least one STEM class at Foothill College during the duration of the internship;

• You must be able to spend at least 10-15 hours per week during the academic calendar conducting research;

• You must provide your own transportation to/from the internship site; and

• Each internship assignment is entirely volunteer-based; no pay is provided.

To be considered, you must submit a complete application packet by June 30; late applications will not be considered. Your application packet must include:

1. A current resume with all work experience, formal education and training (PDF or Word);

2. A personal letter detailing your background, qualifications, academic and career goals, and how this work experience can help you to achieve these goals (PDF or Word). No more than one page;

3. Unofficial transcripts for completed courses (PDF or scanned image); and

4. Two Letters of recommendation.

U.S. citizenship is not required for participation (if you are not a U.S. citizen, you will not be matched with an internship dealing with national security issues). Foothill College hosts its third annual Learning Curve Bike Circuit Race, at which some 400 cyclists are expected to peddle around the 1.09-mile campus loop road, Sunday, July 14, in Los Altos Hills. Registration, fees and race start times will be announced soon.

The event is a fundraiser and proceeds will be used to build a pedestrian/bike path from El Monte Road to the pedestrian bridge that creates safer access for students and the community. Foothill College is teaming up with the Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club to present the race.

Held under USAC rules, the Foothill College Learning Curve Circuit Race categories include juniors, elite men, elite women and masters. Participants must present a current USA Cycling License at registration. A one-day or annual license may be purchased during online registration as well as on race day. There are no refunds. Race route, rules, forms and information will be announced soon.

Volunteers are needed to help with same-day race preparations, including registration, fundraising and serving as racecourse safety marshals.

Park in Lot 7 and walk to the race registration area. Purchase required parking permit for $3 from dispensers in these lots. All other vehicular traffic access to the campus will be closed on race day as a safety measure to protect cyclists and spectators.

Obon is an annual Buddhist event for commemorating one's ancestors. It's believed that each year during obon, the ancestors' spirits return to this world to visit their relatives.

Traditionally, lanterns are hung in front of houses to guide the ancestors' spirits, obon dances (bon odori) are performed, graves are visited and food offerings are made at house altars and temples. September 11, 2013, marks the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The day is a federally recognized national day of service and remembrance.

On Sept. 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four commercial U.S. jetliners, deliberately crashing two of the planes into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center and a third plane into the Pentagon. After learning of the other attacks, passengers and crew members on the fourth plane attempted to commandeer control, and the plane was crashed into an empty field in Western Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed on that day—-the single largest loss of life from a foreign attack on American soil.

By a joint resolution approved Dec. 18, 2001, Congress designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day (Public Law 107-89). On Patriot Day, we remember the victims and pay tribute to the valiant firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel and ordinary citizens who risked their lives so others might live.

Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement): The conclusion of the Ten Days of Awe, Yom Kippur is the holiest and most solemn of all days in the Jewish year. It is characterized by repentance, fasting, and forgiveness. (Judaism)

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is a combined event that is annually observed in the United States on September 17. This event commemorates the formation and signing of the Constitution of the United States on Sept. 17, 1787. The U.S. Department of Education provides various resources on the event as the department is responsible for implementing Constitution Day legislated mandates. Among these is the requirement for educational institutions that receive federal funds to hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on Sept. 17 each year.

On Constitution Day, an event which falls during Constitution Week (Sept. 17-23), many people in the United States recognize the anniversary of the nation's constitution and the efforts and responsibilities of all citizens. With regard to the nation's constitution, in the summer of 1787, delegates convened in Philadelphia to create "a more perfect union" and to craft the country's constitution. They worked to develop a framework that would provide balance and freedom, taking into account federal and state interests, as well as individual human rights. The delegates signed the constitution of the United States on Sept. 17 that year. By June 21, 1788, the constitution was effective, having been approved by nine of the 13 states.

As with several other festivals, Diwali is associated with one of the stories about the destruction of evil by Vishnu in one of his many manifestations. In Jainism, where the festival is also known as Mahavira Nirvana, Diwali celebrates the attainment of Moksa by Lord Mahavira. The United Nations' (UN) World AIDS Day is an occasion to honor those who have died of AIDS and those who live with HIV or AIDS and to increase awareness of these conditions. It is held Dec. 1 each year.

AIDS is a condition resulting from damage done to the human immune system by HIV. It affects tens of millions of people around the world. The United Nations' (UN) World AIDS Day is held on Dec. 1 each year to honor the victims of the AIDS pandemic and focus attention on the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS related conditions.

The deadline to petition for Fall Quarter graduation is Dec. 1. If you intend to graduate at the end of this quarter, you are responsible for scheduling the required 30-minute petition consultation with a Foothill counselor online or by calling (650) 949-7423.

You must meet with a counselor to complete the petition. Schedule your appointment well before the deadline. Appointments fill up quickly; plan accordingly.

Petition for Graduation—Upon completion of required coursework, you may request to receive the A.A./A.A.-T/A.S./A.S.-T degree from Foothill College. You must complete a 30-minute petition for graduation consultation with a Foothill counselor and all transcripts of your college coursework at Foothill and/or other schools must be on file at Foothill College. The petition should be filed no later than the beginning of the quarter during which you plan to complete graduation requirements. Foothill confers degrees every quarter, and the annual commencement ceremony is presented in June. Foothill College presents its 54th Annual Commencement Ceremony Friday, June 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Library Quad. The evening will feature inspirational messages from Foothill College students, faculty and staff. Tickets are not required and event parking in student lots is free this evening only. Encourage your guests to arrive early to locate parking and seating.

You must purchase academic regalia--gown, cap, tassel, hood and Honors gold cord (if eligible)--to participate in the Commencement Ceremony. Purchase and pick up your regalia at the Foothill Bookstore. The cost of gown, cap and tassel is $39.95 plus tax. The hood rental is $10 plus tax and a $20 refundable deposit. To receive your deposit and your diploma, you must return the hood to the Foothill Bookstore. Extra tassels are available for purchase. You may also purchase announcements to send to your guests at the Foothill Bookstore. Blank formal announcements are $19.95 per pack of 25.
