Radio Broadcasting (2011-2012)
Using classroom instruction and hands-on, practical experience, this program offers training for a wide variety of jobs in broadcasting and closely related fields. The academic portion provides historical and current overviews of the industry and examines the outlook for the future. The hands-on portion offers students the opportunity to work in one or more of the ten departments at Foothill's FM radio station, KFJC.
Virtually every aspect of commercial broadcasting is available at KFJC: news, sports, public affairs, music, production, publicity, promotions, programming, traffic, sales, engineering, and public service. There are four major areas of specialization for a degree (Journalism, Performance, Business/Sales, and Business/Management). Each area of emphasis is supplemented heavily with course work from that discipline. Students also maintain KFJC’s website (www.kfjc.org) through which the station streams its air sound over the Internet.
Program Learning Outcomes
• Students will demonstrate ability to perform the functions of a live in-studio radio program, including but not limited to engineering, FCC log completion, and announcing.
• Students will demonstrate ability to script, voice, record and edit “spot” announcements.
