1. Description -
Speaking and listening experience in culturally appropriate ways. Special emphasis on correct perception and speaking, and familiarity with oral idioms and grammar as they differ from more formal written and literary uses. Development of critical thinking skills by comparing different viewpoints and different values of diverse cultures. Development of listening and speaking skills by exploring various forms of authentic materials, such as current news media, formal and informal conversations. Understanding ambiguities, vagaries, and value inherent in the target language.
Prerequisite: JAPN 3.
Co-requisite: None
Advisory: May be taken concurrently with JAPN 4.

2. Course Objectives -
The students should be able to:
  1. interpret speech of native speakers on general, familiar topics at a normal rate of speech
  2. express feelings, opinions, and intentions, argue, evaluate, and request with fluency
  3. talk intelligently and idiomatically about topics covered in the course
  4. recognize and explain aspects of Japanese culture
  5. predict a pattern of behavior and thinking of the Japanese people in a given situation

4. Course Content (Body of knowledge) -
  1. appreciation of different values by having critical discussions with variety of native speaking guests. Analyzing and evaluating different ideas, information, and opinions.
  2. appreciation of human life and current trend by watching and analyzing Japanese videos for discussion
  3. contrastive analysis of different speaking styles: plain, polite, humble and respect forms.
  4. appreciation of nonverbal communications such as gestures and body languages.
  5. understanding of the ambiguities, vagaries and other cultural connotations of Japanese language.
  6. procedures in a medical clinic -- conversation with a receptionist, with a nurse explaining symptoms, and consulting with a doctor
  7. at a department store -- expressions in a department store (audio tape recording of phrases at a store), finding what one wants, getting advice, and declining politely
  8. placing orders for merchandise, cancellation of order
  9. getting around by public transportation -- asking for direction, expressions of showing the way, giving suggestions

  1. Listen to the model dialogues to learn native pitch, intonation and tones of the language.
  2. Improve the pronunciation, rhythm, intonation and fluency by listening and repeating the recorded passages.
  3. Do the online activities and the recorded exercises in the workbooks to improve the functional abilities.
  4. Work on the recorded sentence structure exercises to practice new sentence patterns and variations.
  5. Dictation practice to improve aural competency.
  6. Practice new vocabulary by using the online and recorded materials containing new vocabulary lists along with an interactive exercise to test the knowledge of the vocabulary.
  7. Listen to short recorded passages to further expand the vocabulary and related expressions.
  8. View online movie files to understand native behaviors, body languages and cultural nuances.
  9. Take online listening quizzes to reinforce the learned materials.

  1. Reading the grammar points and model dialogues in the textbook and the workbook.
  2. Read the online resource materials to prepare for in-class discussions.
  3. Read online articles on current and historical issues involving Japan to prepare for in-class discussions.

This course is a restricted support course for the AA degree in Japanese.
