1. Description -
Special topics or projects in any Child Development academic discipline or program area. Specific course and/or special projects vary each quarter depending upon selected student, population, methodology and faculty member.
Prerequisite: None
Co-requisite: None
Advisory: Enrollment is limited to six times within the CHLD 68 group.

2. Course Objectives -
Student will be able to:
  1. Research a topic related to early childhood education and demonstrate understanding and application of that knowledge.
  2. Develop a project to demonstrate understanding and application of material.
  3. Exhibit improved knowledge and performance within the areas of student's responsibility in the field of early childhood education.

4. Course Content (Body of knowledge) -
Student will be able to:
  1. Research a topic related to early care and education and demonstrate understanding and application of that knowledge.
    1. Selected study areas of early childhood practice such as but not limited to these examples:
      1. Application of literacy research, including bilingualism, to infant and toddler care giving
      2. Cooking as a curriculum tool for teaching math and science concepts to young children
      3. Structuring an outdoor play environment to foster socialization among preschoolers
      4. Innovative parent education approaches
  2. Develop a project to demonstrate understanding and application of material.
    1. Research and implement a project which will positively impact an early childhood environment such as but not limited to:
      1. A bi-lingual curriculum for infants and toddlers incorporating high school students as volunteers
      2. An ongoing classroom cooking curriculum in which math and science concepts are integral to the children's enjoyment of the experiences
      3. Improving preschoolers' social interaction in an outdoor play environment incorporating no or low cost strategies.
      4. Develop a parenting library and monthly discussion group
  3. Exhibit improved knowledge and performance within the areas of student's responsibility in the field of early care and education.
    1. Teaching demonstrations
