Required Steps Before Starting to Work

Without an SSN

International students who do not currently have a Social Security Number (SSN) must complete all of the following steps before beginning on-campus employment:

  1. Secure an on-campus job: You may visit offices and departments individually to inquire about open positions. You can also consult Career Services in Room 8300 for assistance.
  2. Obtain an Employment Verification Letter: Once offered a job, ask your employing department/office to issue a letter verifying your employment. Requirements for the letter:
    • Your name must match the one on your I-20
    • Signed by your immediate supervisor
    • Printed on Foothill College letterhead
    • Follow the sample letter format, available from the Financial Aid Office or the International Student Office.
  3. Request a Social Security Letter from the International Student Office: Bring the employment verification letter to the International Student Office (Room 1933). We will verify your lawful F-1 immigration status. New students: Please wait for 2 weeks after the start of your first quarter at Foothill before requesting this letter.
  4. Apply for a Social Security Number: Once you obtain the two letters mentioned above, please follow specific SSN application instructions. Obtain a receipt verifying your SSN application submission.
  5. Complete Student Employment Packet: Submit your SSN application receipt and all other required documents to the Financial Aid Office to complete the student employment packet. After receiving your SSN Card by mail (usually takes about two weeks), present it to the Financial Aid Office to be added to payroll. Once approved, Financial Aid will notify both the International Student Office and your immediate supervisor so you can officially start working on campus.
