Chemistry 1A Placement Survey
Our in-person Chemistry 1A placement exam is unavailable until further notice.
If you want to take Chemistry 1A, we offer two online placement options.

Chemistry 1A Prerequisite Requirements
Chemistry
Completion of Chemistry 20 or 25, OR the equivalent at another college/university (to be reviewed by Evaluations by submitting a prerequisite clearance request), OR a College Board AP Chemistry score of a 3 or higher (to be reviewed by Evaluations by submitting a prerequisite clearance request), OR placement through the Chemistry 1A placement exam, AND
Math
Completion of Math 105 (intermediate algebra), or higher, OR the equivalent at another college/university (to be reviewed by Evaluations by submitting a prerequisite clearance request), OR a College Board AP Calculus AB or BC score of a 3 or higher (to be reviewed by Evaluations by submitting a prerequisite clearance request), OR placement out of Math 105 by assessment.
Select Best Placement Option for You
Normally, if you had no previous chemistry courses (in high school or college/university) OR had previous chemistry courses, but unsatisfactory grades, then you could request to take our paper Chemistry 1A placement exam to bypass the chemistry prerequisite (as outlined above).
Since we are unable to provide you with in-person testing, we offer the following two options:
Option 1: Submit Prerequisite Clearance RequestIf you completed Chemistry 20 or 25, OR the equivalent at another college/university OR received an AP Chemistry score of a 3, or higher, you may be able to submit a prerequisite clearance request to clear the chemistry prerequisite. For more information and instructions, see Ways to Clear a Prerequisite NOTE: You can also submit a prerequisite clearance request to clear the math prerequisite if you have eligible college courses and/or AP scores. If you cannot clear the math prerequisite through Evaluations and you do not have a math placement through us, you will need to request one by emailing the Assessment Office at fhtesting@fhda.edu. |
Option 2: Complete Placement SurveyIf you completed chemistry at a U.S. high school, you may be able to clear the chemistry prerequisite for Chemistry 1A by completing a short online survey. Please read the requirements below to see if you are eligible for Option 2:
If you meet all requirements, select the button below to complete the Chemistry 1A Placement Survey. Once you submit your request, it can take up to 5 business days to receive a determination. If you do not have a current math placement, a math placement will be given to you based on the high school transcript you submit during the survey OR the official high school transcript on file with Admissions and Records. IMPORTANT NOTE: If your math placement does not meet or exceed the Chemistry 1A math prerequisite, your request will be denied even if you meet the chemistry prerequisite. To avoid this, please make sure you have a math placement higher than Math 105 already OR request and complete our math assessment before completing the Chemistry 1A Placement Survey OR confirm that your math prerequisite clearance request submission to Evaluations has been approved and processed before completing our Chemistry 1A Placement Survey. |
De Anza Chemistry Test Score Transfer
- Foothill College does not accept the transfer of De Anza Chem Exam scores.
- We cannot accept placement test scores from the CSUs, UCs, or other outside institutions.
