Transfer General Education (TGE) Certification

Once you've been admitted to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) campus, your transfer institution will typically require a Transfer General Education (TGE) certification. Below, you'll find the types of GE certifications available and instructions on how to submit a request.

The processing time for a GE Certification is typically between 7 to 14 business days, provided all coursework is complete. If any coursework is still in progress, processing will occur within 14 business days after the grades are posted to student records. Please note that during the end of the Spring quarter, processing times may be extended due to graduation.

Cal-GETC	Transfers to CSU or UC. Starting Fall 2025.
IGETC UC*	Transfer to UC
IGETC CSU*	Transfer to CSU
CSU GE Breadth*	Transfer to CSU

*Legacy pattern ended Summer 2025, but still valid with catalog rights.

Meet with a Counselor
It is strongly recommended that you confirm all requirements for full certification with a counselor.

Foothill College Must Be Your Last Community College
Certification can only be processed if Foothill is the last community college you attended.

One Certification Per Student
Only one official GE certification will be processed per student.

Submit Requests Before Transfer
Requests must be submitted prior to transferring to your university.

Transfer Coursework Must Be Evaluated
All applicable transfer coursework must appear on DegreeWorks after evaluation. If you need official transcripts evaluated, complete the Transcript Evaluation Request form first.
AP/IB Exam Scores
If you need official AP or IB scores evaluated, complete the External Exam Request form first.

UC-Specific Requirement: Language Other Than English (LOTE) UC certification requires a LOTE component. If using two years of high school language, ensure it has been reviewed and completed before requesting certification. If you need to submit LOTE documentation, complete the Language Other Than English Request form first.

Failure to meet these requirements will result in automatic denial.

Step 1: Log in to your MyPortal Account.

Step 2: Under “Students” select the “DegreeWorks” tile to open DegreeWorks

Step 3: Click the 'What-If' tab (second option to the right of 'Academic Audit').

Step 4 :Update the search parameters:
- Catalog Year: Year to which you have catalog rights
- Degree: Transfer General Education FH
- Level: Foothill Undergraduate
- Major: Select one of the following:
    * Cal-GETC
    * IGETC-UC FH
    * IGETC-CSU FH
    * CSU GE/Breadth FH

Step 5: Click the blue 'Process' button to run the audit.

Step 6: Click the Printer icon (top right) and save as PDF.

Partial Certification Requests

A partial certification may be available by request. Please review the criteria below to determine whether you meet the requirements for a partial certification under a specific TGE pattern.

Important: Only one certification will be sent to the receiving institution. Once a partial certification has been submitted, the receiving institution must determine how your Transfer General Education (TGE) requirements will be fulfilled. It is strongly recommended that, before requesting a partial certification, you consult with the receiving institution and make arrangements for how you will complete your general education requirements.

TGE Pattern	Requirements for Partial Certification
IGETC	Completing all but two (2) courses to qualify. Must complete all of Area 1 and Area 2.
Cal-GETC (UC only)	Completing all but two (2) courses to qualify. Must complete English Composition & Mathematics. Partial not accepted by the CSU.
CSU GE Breadth	Must complete the “Golden Four”: English Composition, Critical Thinking, Communication, and Mathematics (All of Area A and Area B4).
